FAQs
What is a break and jump cue?
A break & jump cue is a dual-purpose specialty cue that combines the power and stiffness of a dedicated break cue with the elevated, protruding tip of a jump cue. It allows for powerful breaking and jumping capabilities in one shaft.
What are the key features of a break and jump cue?
Quality break & jump cues feature an extremely stiff, low-deflecting shaft designed to maximize power transfer on the break. The tip is an extended phenolic construction allowing it to elevate over obstacles for jump shots. Weights are usually 19-25oz.
When would I use the break vs jump functionality?
Use the thick, sturdy tip end for thunderous, precision breaks to shatter the rack. Flip the cue around and use the tapered, protruding jump end to easily clear obstacle balls and jump over clusters.
What are the advantages of a combo break & jump cue?
Combining capabilities reduces the need to switch between multiple shafts. The stable, beefy construction is ideal for power breaking while the jump mechanism provides shotmaking versatility. It eliminates carrying separate dedicated cues.
How should I maintain a break/jump cue?
Keep both tip types fully chalked and undamaged. Check for any cracks in the joint or ferrule areas. Use cue shafts and avoid excessive cue ball impacts. Store safely in a well-padded case to prevent warping.
Are there any disadvantages to a break and jump combo cue?
While highly versatile, combo cues can be heavy and lack the precision feel and spin capabilities of a dedicated playing cue. The stiff, straight-shooting nature may not suit some player styles.
